The Ladder, a fantastic organisation supporting artists and makers in the creative industries, commissioned me, using funding from GWR Community Fund, to make 2x roundels for the town.
The brief was to be in the style of London overground signage created by Maud Milton at Artyface which is in a manner of the underground signs (see links). As these use hand made tiles by the community they struck a chord in the similarities of my Sowena commission at Camborne Train Station.
Tile making workshops were organised at the Create centre in Camborne and The Ladder in Redruth.
I've included a Cornish twist in the roundels in that the edges are now cog shaped to represent the industrial heritage in the area. The 'Redruth' roundel features many heart shaped tiles showing peoples love for the area and the central section comprises tiles with the names of every road and street in the town. The 'Bond Street' roundel features star tiles with the names of famous & prominent people taking inspiration from the seating bench that has the names painted on it, and is now resident outside of the Ladder building. The central section here has words that state the arts, crafts and inspiration that is making Bond Street the cultural quarter of the town.
Installation will be taking place soon. See my Gallery for more images.
